Archdiocese Criminal Case Agreement

In June 2015, the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office brought civil and criminal charges against the Archdiocese alleging a failure to protect children in the handling of a former priest, Curtis Wehmeyer. In December 2015, the Archdiocese settled the civil claims and entered into a Settlement Agreement with the Ramsey County Attorney. The criminal case remained pending.

The Archdiocese appeared in Court on July 20 to report on its progress implementing its child-protection protocols under the civil Settlement Agreement. The report was accepted by the Judge and the Ramsey County Attorney. The civil case will remain active until February 2020 and the Archdiocese will file periodic progress reports with the Court until then.

You may have also read or heard that the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office dropped the criminal charges against the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis. That concludes the criminal proceedings. The Archdiocese will continue to work with the Ramsey County Attorney to implement the Settlement Agreement as part of its ongoing commitment to protect children.

Please continue to pray for healing and peace for all of those who have been abused, pray for priests, and pray for the Church – that it is a safe and welcoming place for all.
