What an exciting time in your child’s life!
“Take and Eat, this is my body, which is given up for you…”
(New Roman Missal)
St. Edward’s offers the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation (Penance) in the 2nd grade year. We welcome our children to the table of the Lord in a family-friendly process. The program consists of study in the small group or at a Catholic School (must be enrolled to receive the sacrament) in conjunction with a home study series to be completed as a family. There is a parent’s only meeting for each sacrament, an evening of preparation and for Eucharist, a rehearsal for the day of reception of the sacrament.
Children love the church tour, the projects and video presentations and large group teachings that help them understand how these special gifts of God’s Grace unite them with the greater community. Again, preparation is presented in a variety of learning styles and hands-on experiences. Children are invited to participate in the liturgical ministries of the sacraments such as reading the “Prayers of the Faithful” which are written by the children, bringing up the gifts at offertory and banners in processions.
Reconciliation is offered to any second and third grader who has not yet received. There will be one parent night and one evening of preparation. The service is Form 2 (community prayer service and individual confessions) on a Wednesday evening with parents and family. Families must be registered members of the Church of St. Edward and a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate must be on file with our parish office. Child must be enrolled either in Wednesday evening Faith Formation sessions or a Catholic School.
Preparation begins with a parent meeting. Children will prepare for the weeks following in small groups and parents will be instructed to use home materials, “Together in Jesus.” There will be an evening of preparation for parents and children during session times. Children will receive the sacrament also during session time.
