Delivering dignity to your neighbor’s door
St. Edward’s has a rich legacy of serving the hungry through Bloomington Meals on Wheels, starting with its inception in the late 1980’s. Our ongoing support is twofold: personal through volunteer drivers Monday through Friday every 6th week as well as financial. St. Edward’s is also represented on the Board of Directors. The meals and daily contact by caring volunteers allow frail, home bound persons to remain in their own homes… where they want to be.
Bloomington Meals on Wheels is a ministry to deliver a fresh, hot, midday meal Mondays through Fridays to people who are unable to prepare their noon meal. The meals are prepared by a licensed caterer and picked up by volunteer drivers from St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church on 84th Street and France Avenue for delivery. Route maps are provided and routes will typically have 4-6 stops. The program serves 85 to 100 persons each day.
Just as important as the delivery of the meal is visiting the home of the person receiving the meal. It provides a person-to-person contact for that person who is otherwise shut-in as well as a safety check. If a person does not answer the door, the volunteer driver will report to the Meals on Wheels staff and they will follow up.
You can get involved by volunteering to deliver meals from 10:30am to 12:00pm on the day you agree to drive. Volunteers usually work in pairs. You must have a vehicle, valid driver’s license and agree to a background check. Drivers are arranged about one week in advance of the delivery date. You can also take a turn on the Board of Directors, or get involved as a backup caller for drivers.
“Barbara, who delivers my Monday meal, has become a friend. I also wish to commend Kathy and her sons, Eric, Tom and Pat. Often these volunteers are my only outside contact. Barbara always has a kind inquiry and shares her life.” – Johanna
“Thank you for taking time out of your day to bring us the meals we enjoy! It is a bright spot in my day to get the lunch you deliver!” – Ingrid
“My Wednesday volunteer is so faithful and cheerful. Always has a smile and encouraging word. I look forward to seeing her and appreciate her very much. We have become friends as we talk about hockey! I am very thankful for her service.” – Frances
