All are called to serve.
How can we form life-long servers of Christ’s work in our community? The Church says we are to teach through faith formation and serve in ways to better understand our faith. God’s call, Pope Francis said, “is a call to go out and share God’s mercy and the joy of faith”.
How does a child or young adult live up to this task our Holy Father has asked of all Catholics? In many ways, do not fear! One specific way would be to serve on the altar.
Serving at the altar, the pope said to a group of newly trained altar servers, “is a privileged way to draw closer to Jesus, which in turn enables you to open yourselves to others, to journey together”
Pope Francis has called young Catholics to serve and participate in their faith. “The closer you are to the altar,” he said, “the more you will remember to speak with Jesus in daily prayer; the more you will be nourished by the word and the body of the Lord, the better able you will be to go out to others, bringing them the gift that you have received, giving in turn with enthusiasm the joy you have received”.
Without being an altar server as a child, I would never have cared as much about the Mass or learned as much about my faith—that it is something done in community, that God is indeed present in the little things we do, and that faith is something I actively do, not something I simply hear. Being an altar server taught me to take ownership of my faith. Building faith through learning the teachings of the Church as well as building a relationship with God for young Catholics can happen in many ways. Perhaps for the youth of our parish, being an altar server can be one of those ways.
As a young Catholic, being an altar server gave me a role and a responsibility at a time in life when many of my peers felt unengaged and uninterested in the Church. My time altar serving kept me involved in Mass as a child and teen. This opportunity should be available for young boys and girls of our parish.
As we move into the new fall season and soon a new liturgical season of Advent it is my hope to begin to train St. Edward’s youth, in grades 5 and up, into the role of altar servers. If your child is interested please reach out to me at 952-835-7101.
