The first setting is in 1988 in a remote Chinese mountain village dependent on tea crops. Li Yan helps her mother tend a hidden and unique tea tree. When Li Yan becomes pregnant, she sneaks her baby girl to an orphanage.
The second setting is in Los Angeles. Li Yan’s baby, now a teenage Haley, lives with adoptive parents. Her intestinal problems and her Chinese mother’s maturity take them on their individual coming-of-age journeys.
