The Three Essentials
The Church of St. Edwards takes seriously the need to provide a safe environment for our children and youth while participating in our programs. Therefore, we take three steps when accepting a volunteer to work with our children.
Essential Step One
The first step is to complete a background check on each volunteer. Background Check Packets are available at the church office. The packets include disclosures and forms that need to be completed, signed, and returned to the church office to process a background check report.
Essential Step Two
The second step is to ensure that every volunteer attend a VIRTUS training session. VIRTUS sessions are provided by the Protection of Children and Youth Initiative (PCYI) of the Archdiocese and is a facilitator-led awareness session concerning child sexual abuse and other inappropriate sexual behavior. This training is offered at many parish locations throughout the year.

1. Go to www.virtus.org
2. Click “First Time Registrant”on the left
3. Click “Begin Registration Process” or “View a List of Sessions”
4. Select “St. Paul and Minneapolis, MN (Archdiocese)” by scrolling about half way down
5. Create a user ID & password
6. Follow the screen prompts to continue the on-line registration

Please plan to arrive 10 minutes early to all sessions as the attendance is counted from the beginning of the session at 6:30. If you arrive late, you will not be able to attend. Essential Step Three
The third step is to have every volunteer sign a Volunteer Code of Conduct form. These forms are included in the Background Check packets found at the church office and need to be signed and returned to the church office.
